After an eventful first day in pads, the Steelers picked up right where they left off, with a clear emphasis on red‑zone work.
Today's training camp storylines include - the new version of “seven shot,” offensive linemen dominating in one‑on‑ones, and a forgotten running back rising up.
So, Steelers fans, let's go!
Injury Report -
Logan Lee remained out of pads for the second straight day, suggesting he may be dealing with a day‑to‑day issue. Cornerback Donte Kent was also not in pads during the session.
The good news was that safety DeShon Elliott participated in team drills.
A significant roster move followed: receiver Cole Burgess was waived after suffering a serious knee injury in yesterday’s practice. In response, the team signed Jakobie Keeney‑James out of Eastern Washington.
Boswell Is Perfect
Boswell struggled on Day 3, but on this day he bounced back in full, going a perfect 8‑for‑8 — vintage Chris Boswell.
The "Five Shots" Red Zone Drill
The team revisited a familiar concept from former head coach Mike Tomlin’s camps, running a five‑shot version of the old “Seven Shots” drill. The offense took the red‑zone period 4–1, and it’s reasonable to expect this variation to appear again as the week continues.
McCormick Is A Standout
During one-on-ones yesterday, offensive lineman Mason McCormick won almost every rep. On this day, he soundly beat defensive tackle Sebastian Joesph-Day, who was not very happy afterwards. To say the least, McCormick has been a standout in pads.
The Duo of Hoffman and Iheanachor
If there was one theme noted today, it was the work both rookie tackle Max Iheanachor and guard Brock Hoffman was doing opening holes on the right side. Both of them helped running backs such as Kaleb Johnson and rookie Eli Heidenreich get the room needed to make plays.
Worth noting is that both Hoffman and Iheanachor were strong performers during one-on-ones. In the case of Iheanchor, he got the best of linebackers T.J Watt, Nick Herbig, and Jack Sawyer, which solidified his best day at training camp.
Johnson Shows Out In A Big Way
If there is one player that needs a big training camp, it was running back Kaleb Johnson. After being silent the last few days, Johnson rose to the occasion on this day with big runs during team drills, and also stepping in to provide protection on a sequence that was blown.
In addition to his impressive runs, he also took reps on special teams on kickoff and punt return. In all, it was exactly the type of day he needed to boost is confidence and overall value.
