Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins is currently employed with the Atlanta Falcons. However, with the team moving forward with Michael Penix Jr., Cousins will certainly be looking for a new destination.
In his latest piece for CBS Sports, NFL analyst Cody Benjamin listed the Pittsburgh Steelers as one of three possible destinations for Cousins. It is no secret that the team has had another veteran in their sights: Aaron Rodgers. As it stands, however, Rodgers has not officially committed to the team, leaving a significant void for the Steelers to fill at starting quarterback.
Given the uncertainty surrounding Rodgers' potential signing, Benjamin believes that head coach Mike Tomlin could look to sign Cousins as their veteran quarterback alongside Mason Rudolph.
"What if Rodgers never puts pen to paper? What if he retires? And what if the Steelers can't secure a legitimate quarterback early in the draft? Something says Mike Tomlin might rather gamble with another aging veteran than open his next AFC North gauntlet with Mason Rudolph leading the charge."
Considering the number of pre-draft visits the team has held with various quarterbacks this off-season, they might look to the draft early to find a new addition to the roster. Another aspect to note is Cousins' contract, which carries a large cap hit for this season and could deter the Steelers from acquiring the veteran quarterback.
As the off-season progresses, the team's quarterback options continue to dwindle. If Rodgers is no longer an option, they will face some difficult decisions on how to address the position for this season.
