This Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will get a true measure of where they stand among playoff contenders.
Fresh off a pivotal victory over the Miami Dolphins on Monday, the team now faces what may be its toughest challenge of the season: a matchup against quarterback Jared Goff and the high-powered Detroit Lions.
Although the Lions have seen a slight dip in their overall record this year, their offensive firepower remains intact. Heading into Week 16, Detroit ranks fourth in total offensive yards (5,319), fourth in yards per game (379.9), and fifth in total rushing yards (1,836)—a testament to their balanced attack.
The Steelers’ defense will undoubtedly have its hands full against the NFL’s dynamic rushing tandem of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, affectionately nicknamed “Sonic and Knuckles.” Containing this duo will be critical to Pittsburgh’s chances of securing another statement win.
During his Tuesday press conference, head coach Mike Tomlin shared encouraging news regarding rookie defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, who has been sidelined with a knee injury. Harmon's return is expected to significantly strengthen the Steelers’ run defense—a critical factor for Sunday’s matchup. When Harmon has been on the field this season, the Steelers have allowed just 96 rushing yards per game, compared to 190 yards per game prior to Week 15 in his absence.
Even with Harmon back, the entire defensive front will need a collective effort to contain both David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, while also limiting the impact of talented pass catchers such as wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta.
A win would not only solidify the Steelers’ position atop the AFC North but also move them closer to clinching a playoff berth. Considering the numerous challenges the team has faced this season, achieving that goal would make the journey worthwhile.
