Among the unexpected developments following the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 14 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, the team may be without All-Pro linebacker T.J. Watt for Monday night’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Watt is currently hospitalized due to a medical treatment that led to a lung issue.
Despite a down season by his standards, Watt’s absence would still deliver a significant blow to a defense whose sack production has stalled in recent weeks. While Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig are expected to shoulder much of the responsibility, attention may also shift to rookie Jack Sawyer, who has quietly carved out a role in Pittsburgh’s edge rotation.
Sawyer, a fourth-round pick out of Ohio State, has shown flashes of promise in limited action this season. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 260 pounds, he combines size and athleticism, making him effective against both the run and the pass. Earlier in the year, Sawyer delivered a standout performance with multiple tackles for loss and a sack, proving he can disrupt plays when given the opportunity. His ability to set the edge and generate pressure could be critical against a Dolphins offense that thrives on timing and speed.
Although his production has dipped slightly, Sawyer at one point held the second-highest pass-rushing grade among rookies, trailing only Giants first-round pick Abdul Carter. With the likelihood of increased defensive snaps, he has an opportunity to recapture his early-season form.
If Watt is sidelined, Sawyer’s role will likely expand beyond his usual rotational duties. Miami’s quick-strike passing game and explosive run schemes, led by De’Von Achane, demand disciplined edge play. Sawyer’s physicality and relentless motor make him well-suited for the challenge. With the Steelers fighting to remain in playoff contention, the rookie has a chance to make a statement under the prime-time spotlight—potentially turning a difficult situation into both a breakout moment for himself and a stabilizing force for Pittsburgh’s defense.
