CBS Sports Mock Ole Miss Star QB to Steelers in 2027

It is no secret that Pittsburgh Steelers veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers is expected to retire following next season.

Even with multiple in-house options potentially available to succeed him, one CBS Sports analyst believes Pittsburgh could still be in the market for a quarterback early in the 2027 NFL Draft.

In his latest 2027 mock draft, NFL analyst Ryan Wilson projects the Steelers to select Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss with the 28th overall pick. The projection assumes that two of the draft's top quarterback prospects, Oklahoma State's Drew Mestemaker and Oregon's Dante Moore, are already off the board by the time Pittsburgh is on the clock.

However, Wilson also raised alternative scenarios for the Steelers. The team could choose to move forward with Drew Allar, whom they selected in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, or potentially target Missouri standout Austin Simmons if he declares for the 2027 draft.

"The Steelers need a QB. This is not up for debate. But do they roll with '26 third-rounder Drew Allar? Would, say, 6-foot-4 Austin Simmons make more sense here? Or does Mike McCarthy roll the dice on Chambliss, who is not 6-foot but has played a lot of high-level SEC football and is a proven winner?"

While Chambliss may not possess the ideal size that NFL teams typically covet at the position, his experience in the SEC and track record of winning make him an intriguing option. With Rodgers nearing the end of his career and the long-term future at quarterback still unsettled, the Steelers' search for their next franchise signal-caller is likely to remain a major storyline heading into the 2027 draft cycle.
