2025 Steelers Camp Recap - Day 11 Notes

ree

With only a handful of practices left in this year’s Steelers training camp, the team returned to the field Tuesday for another high-intensity session. In many respects, the day served as a tune-up for their upcoming preseason matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Among the key storylines from practice: the offense bounced back after a string of tough outings, a rookie running back continued to turn heads, and a promising young quarterback suffered an injury that could impact depth heading into the weekend.

So, Steelers fans, let's go!

Injury Report

Wide receiver Calvin Austin III was once again absent from practice on Tuesday, marking his third consecutive day sidelined due to injury. He did not participate in walkthroughs and was later seen on the field in street clothes, suggesting his return may not be imminent.

On a more positive note, cornerback Joey Porter Jr. returned from the injured list and was spotted in full pads prior to the start of the session. His presence signals a potential boost to the secondary as the team prepares for its upcoming preseason matchup.

The Steelers continue to manage a growing list of injuries as training camp winds down. Among those still sidelined:

  • Calvin Anderson, offensive lineman – lower body injury

  • Cory Trice Jr., cornerback – hamstring

  • Donte Kent, cornerback – ankle/foot

  • Gareth Warren, offensive lineman – leg

  • Alex Highsmith, linebacker – groin

Their statuses remain day-to-day as the team prepares for its upcoming preseason matchup against Jacksonville.

Day 11 Camp Notes -

Offense Finally Wins "Seven Shots"

After three consecutive practices dominated by the Steelers’ defense, the offense finally responded with authority, securing a decisive 5–2 victory in Tuesday’s team drills.

The unit came out firing, jumping to a 4–0 lead at one point, highlighted by a touchdown run from rookie running back Kaleb Johnson. The performance marked a much-needed turnaround, showcasing improved rhythm, execution, and confidence across the offensive unit.

Roman Wilson Has A Solid Day

It’s hard not to believe that seeing his name on the Steelers’ latest depth chart gave rookie wide receiver Wilson an extra spark. He made the most of his reps on Tuesday, delivering one of his strongest showings of camp.

Wilson found the end zone during the “Seven Shots” drill and beat defensive back Beanie Bishop twice in one-on-one matchups. He also hauled in multiple receptions during team sessions, further solidifying his case for a larger role.

If he can continue stacking performances like this, Wilson may soon climb higher on that chart.

Will Howard's injury

Rookie quarterback Will Howard was absent from the field during a portion of Tuesday’s practice, raising concerns among observers. Moments later, Howard was seen leaving in a cart alongside a team trainer.

In his absence, Skylar Thompson stepped in with the third-team offense.

Head coach Mike Tomlin later confirmed that Howard sustained an injury to his throwing hand during a snap exchange with the center. The severity of the injury remains unclear, pending further evaluation.

Max Hurleman Impressing The Masses

If there was a standout performer on the day, it was rookie running back Max Hurleman. With a series of highlight-reel catches during both one-on-one drills and full-team sessions, Hurleman made his presence felt throughout practice.

Taking full advantage of the absence of veteran Austin III, Hurleman seized the opportunity to showcase his versatility and playmaking abilities.

Offensive Line Clicking.. A Little

The offensive line has endured a rough stretch throughout training camp, marked by inconsistent execution and breakdowns in protection. But on Tuesday, the unit turned in a more encouraging performance.
