If there’s one thing the Pittsburgh Steelers need heading into the upcoming season, it’s reliable depth along their offensive line—an area that faltered during the latter stages of the 2024 campaign.

Generally speaking, offensive linemen toil in relative anonymity. But in the case of third-year player Spencer Anderson, he is steadily emerging as a foundational piece whose significance continues to grow with each passing season.

Selected in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Maryland, Anderson entered the league as a versatile lineman, having played all five offensive line positions during his collegiate career. This rare adaptability made him a valuable depth asset and earned him the nickname “Swiss Army Knife” among the coaching staff.

In 2024, however, Anderson focused his efforts exclusively on playing guard—a strategic shift that paid immediate dividends. He stepped in as the starting left guard in Week 1 following Isaac Seumalo’s injury and went on to start four games, playing a crucial role in Pittsburgh’s victories over the Falcons, Broncos, and Chargers.

With veteran guard James Daniels no longer on the roster, Anderson’s continued development strengthens an offensive line that has long struggled with consistency and depth. As the Steelers look to fortify their trenches, Anderson’s emergence may prove to be one of the team’s most important assets.

Beyond his physical ability, Anderson distinguishes himself through exceptional football IQ and work ethic. He’s known for relentless preparation, often practicing snaps at center—even when not asked—just to ensure he’s ready when called upon. Reflecting on his rookie season, Anderson once said, “They say your best ability is availability, but behind that, I feel like it’s versatility.” That philosophy has fueled his evolution from a rotational lineman into someone the Steelers increasingly trust in high-pressure situations. While Spencer Anderson may not yet be a household name, his journey from seventh-round selection to dependable starter highlights just how crucial he could be to Pittsburgh’s future—and why fans would be wise to keep a close eye on No. 74.
