When the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired Tanielu "Daniel" Ekuale back in March, they didn't just receive a run-stopping defender, rather, an overall versatile lineman.
During his NFL career, Ekuale has been scheme-flexible, capable of playing both in 3-4 and 4-3 system, making him the ideal player for the team's hybrid defensive scheme. His ability to play both the three-technique and five-technique roles mirrors the responsibilities previously held by Larry Ogunjobi, making him a potential plug-and-play replacement.
For the Steelers this off-season, they have prioritized stopping opposing run defenses, after being thoroughly exposed in this manner in their playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens in January. Ekuale's run defense has been a strength throughout much of his career.
Last season with the New England Patriots, Ekuale posted a 62.7 run defense grade according to Pro Football Focus. Head coach Mike Tomlin emphasized Ekuale’s ability to “play blocks and recognize run schemes extremely well,” noting that he expects him to be an “anchor point” on early downs.
Ekuale may not be a household name, but his signing is a savvy move by the Steelers’ front office. He fills a critical need with a blend of experience, versatility, and toughness that aligns perfectly with Pittsburgh’s defensive identity. As the team looks to reassert its dominance in the trenches, Ekuale could quietly become one of the most impactful additions of the offseason.
