There’s no denying that the Pittsburgh Steelers have a glaring talent gap in their secondary. With the 2026 defensive back class projected to feature exceptional prospects, could the team finally break from tradition and address the cornerback position in the first round—a move they haven’t made since 2016?
In a recent 2026 NFL mock draft for CBS Sports, analyst Ryan Wilson projected the Steelers selecting Clemson cornerback Avieon Terrell with the 20th overall pick.
Despite only being 5'11, Terrell has been noted for his ability to be play bigger than his size. In 2024 with the Clemson, Terrell earned Second-team All-ACC honors for his play, after registering 58 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions, and 12 passes defended.
The appeal for the Steelers, according to Wilson’s analysis, lies in Terrell’s versatility—his ability to play both in the slot and on the outside—combined with his playmaking skills and strong NFL bloodlines.
"Terrell has NFL bloodlines -- his brother is former first-round pick AJ Terrell. Avieon plays bigger than his listed size (see his matchup in 2024 against former Stanford WR Elic Ayomanor). He can stay in phase on vertical routes and has good ball skills and he will try to bait QBs into making throws. In run support, he plays outside CB like he's a strong safety."
Despite Clemson’s unexpected down season in 2025, Terrell has shown virtually no signs of regression. Through nine games, he has recorded 39 tackles, three sacks, nine passes defended, and three forced fumbles. Given the Steelers’ pressing need for top-tier talent in their secondary, the possibility of addressing the position early in the draft should not be overlooked.
