Despite the clear need for upgrades at wide receiver, several draft analysts have taken a different approach when evaluating which positions the Pittsburgh Steelers should target in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft. For one CBS Sports analyst, the focus shifts back to a familiar area: the offensive line.

In his latest mock draft, Mike Renner projects the Steelers selecting one of the nation’s top offensive linemen, Utah’s Caleb Lomu, with the 21st overall pick. Renner cites Broderick Jones as the primary reason for this direction, noting that Jones has struggled with consistency throughout much of his career since being drafted in the first round in 2023.

Given how his counterpart, Dylan Cook, has performed in Jones’s absence, there is growing indication that Jones may not be the ideal long-term option at that position. However, Renner offers an alternative vision for how the Steelers might utilize Jones next season.

“It seems like it’s time to admit Broderick Jones can’t be Plan A at left tackle for the future. Caleb Lomu is a much more refined pass blocker coming out than Jones ever was and could allow Jones to kick inside.”

One important consideration in this scenario is that Jones has never played the guard position. If the team were to move on from veteran Isaac Seumalo this offseason, that role would more likely fall to his draft counterpart, Spencer Anderson, who logged 372 offensive snaps this season.
