Steelers Overcome Struggles On Both Sides To Escape With A Win Over The Jets

ree

In a chaotic kickoff to the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers clawed their way to a dramatic 34–32 victory over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, starting the year 1–0 in thrilling fashion.

The battle was won—and nearly lost—in the trenches. The Jets came out swinging, racking up 18 rushing yards on their opening drive and dominating the ground game throughout the first quarter. By halftime, they had amassed 80 rushing yards on 15 carries and scored on all four of their offensive possessions.

Meanwhile, the Steelers struggled to find rhythm on the ground. Their run game sputtered, producing just 37 rushing yards by the third quarter. After two fruitless drives to open the second half, Jets quarterback Justin Fields led an 8-play, 68-yard march, capping it off with a 2-yard touchdown run to stretch the lead to 26–17.

But Aaron Rodgers wasn’t done. The veteran quarterback responded with a surgical 9-play, 68-yard drive, ending in a touchdown run by Jaylen Warren to cut the deficit to two early in the fourth quarter.

Momentum shifted when Jets returner Xavier Gipson fumbled, and Steelers receiver Ben Skowronek pounced on the loose ball. That turnover set up a go-ahead touchdown by Calvin Austin III, giving Pittsburgh its first lead of the second half. The Jets answered quickly, with Fields scoring his second rushing touchdown of the game. A failed two-point conversion left them clinging to a one-point lead midway through the fourth.

Then came the dagger. With the game on the line, kicker Chris Boswell drilled a clutch 60-yard field goal to put the Steelers ahead 34–32. On the Jets’ final drive, cornerback Jalen Ramsey delivered a punishing hit that jarred the ball loose from receiver Garrett Wilson, sealing the win for Pittsburgh.
