Steelers Offensive Line Faces Early Challenge Against Revamped Jets Defensive Line

ree

The Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive line won’t have to wait long for its first test.

In Week 1, they’ll face a New York Jets defensive front that, while plagued by injuries last season, enters the new campaign healthy and hungry—not to be underestimated.

Under new head coach Aaron Glenn and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, the Jets are expected to bring a blitz-heavy, aggressive defensive identity. At the heart of their line is defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, one of the NFL’s premier interior disruptors. Despite a dip in production last season, Williams still posted a 13.3% pressure rate and recorded six sacks.

What truly defines the Jets’ front, however, is their edge-rushing talent. Will McDonald IV broke out in 2024 with 10.5 sacks and a 14.6% pressure rate. With Jermaine Johnson returning from an Achilles injury, the Jets could field one of the league’s most formidable pass-rushing duos.

For the Steelers, protecting Aaron Rodgers in his Pittsburgh debut is priority number one—and that responsibility begins with tackles Broderick Jones and rookie Troy Fautanu.

Jones returns to his natural position at left tackle after two seasons on the right. He’ll be tasked with protecting Rodgers’ blind side against a Jets defense that ranked fourth in pressure rate last season. While Jones has shown promising growth during camp and preseason, Week 1 will be a true litmus test.

On the right side, Fautanu faces a tough assignment in McDonald IV. Known for his speed and spin moves, McDonald will challenge Fautanu’s technique and discipline. This matchup could be pivotal in determining how much time Rodgers has to operate.

Ultimately, the key to a Steelers victory lies in the trenches. With Jones, Fautanu, and center Zach Frazier—all recent top draft picks—the Steelers have invested heavily in their offensive line. Though still a young unit, they must quickly mature to protect Rodgers and establish the run against a healthy and aggressive Jets front that could cause problems if not properly handled.
