Steelers Make Bold Move With The Iheanachor Selection

The Steelers, facing a board largely cleared of the top names at offensive tackle and wide receiver, turned to upside and projection with the No. 21 pick, selecting Arizona State lineman Max Iheanachor.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Steelers were unaware of Philadelphia’s trade with Dallas to acquire the No. 20 pick, a move that allowed the Eagles to secure USC wideout Makai Lemon — a prospect Pittsburgh believed would fall to them.

The former Sun Devil surged up draft boards after a standout Senior Bowl week and an impressive NFL Combine showing, showcasing the size, power, and athletic growth that made him one of this class’s fastest‑rising prospects. His development translated to the field as well — Iheanachor did not allow a single sack across 484 pass‑blocking snaps last season, a data point that clearly resonated with Pittsburgh’s evaluators.

The selection underscores Pittsburgh’s intent to reshape its offense around a more physical, adaptable front. By investing a first‑round pick in Iheanachor, the Steelers are betting on a lineman who can contribute early while still offering long‑term cornerstone potential. His frame, movement skills, and upward trajectory align with the franchise’s long‑standing preference for tough, moldable offensive linemen who can thrive under NFL coaching. It’s a forward‑leaning pick — one that signals both immediate need and a belief in what Iheanachor can become.
