When it comes to versatility, rookie linebacker Payton Wilson has plenty of it to offer.
This upcoming season, Wilson will likely provide depth behind seasoned linebackers Elandon Roberts and Patrick Queen. Yet, Wilson's athleticism and football instincts allow him to contribute as a rusher in different sub-packages or cover receivers. For the Steelers, having a player like Wilson with his diverse skillset should give defensive coordinator Teryl Austin the option to use him in a way that will benefit his unit.
"Liked him as a football player", Austin said after drafting him. "He brings some speed to our defense. He brings some physicality to our defense. The ability to cover guys. That's what I look at.”
Despite a career that has been somewhat defined by injuries, Wilson has been noted by several publications as one of the best value picks from this year's draft. By all accounts, he is seemingly healthy heading into rookie minicamp and for the remainder of the offseason, leading into training camp. No matter where they decide to employ him, one should not be surprised if Wilson makes a lasting impression.
