Payton Wilson enters the 2026 season with a profile that aligns closely with the league’s emerging elite defenders.

His team‑leading 126 tackles in 2025 established him as a reliable every‑down presence, and his ability to correct early run‑fit inconsistencies demonstrated a level of adaptability uncommon in young linebackers. That rapid development places him on the same growth trajectory seen in established modern standouts such as Fred Warner, whose rise was similarly defined by early diagnostic improvement and expanding responsibility.

Wilson’s potential extends beyond consistency; he has already shown the capacity to deliver high‑impact, momentum‑shifting plays. His two sacks, interception, and multiple pass breakups reflect a defender capable of influencing all phases of the game. The chase down in Dublin against the Vikings in Week 4 stands as a defining example of his athletic ceiling — a play built on range, effort, and closing speed that few linebackers in the league can replicate. He would finish the game with 13 tackles - two tackles for loss and a quarterback hit.

His postseason performance further reinforces this projection. Against Houston, Wilson delivered four tackles, a forced fumble, and a critical pass deflection, showing poise and reliability in a high‑pressure environment. As the Steelers continue to expand his responsibilities in sub‑packages, his versatility in coverage and ability to pressure the quarterback will allow him to complement established leaders such as T.J. Watt while carving out his own identity as a dynamic playmaker.

Ultimately, Wilson’s strengths — elite range, motor, and advanced instincts — are rare, while his areas for refinement are coachable. With another offseason dedicated to overall improving functional strength and enhancing coverage precision, he is positioned to transition from productive young starter to one of the NFL’s most compelling defensive talents. Should he continue producing plays of the caliber seen in Dublin, his emergence as the league’s next defensive star will feel less like projection and more like inevitability.
