One would assume that after all the moves made by Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan in his quarterback room, there is little to no possibility of them adding another one in this year's NFL draft. Yet, when it comes to understanding Khan's moves, it's safer to never assume anything.
In a draft year that is deep at the quarterback position, the Steelers would make it interesting for everyone by adding one to their roster. With the purpose of establishing a strong and competitive roster of quarterbacks, the Steelers have done their diligence this offseason in finding worthy prospects.
During this year's Shrine Bowl, the Steelers met with Florida State's Jordan Travis, who at the time was still recovering from a leg fracture he sustained in November 2023 against North Alabama. Despite the injury, Travis was still named ACC Player of the Year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2023. His injury likely decreased the draft, but his level of talent would still make it worthwhile to invest in a late draft pick.
Possibly the most intriguing action taken by the organization was inviting All-American quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who is regarded by many as a top-10 pick in this year's draft, for a pre-draft visit. The Steelers were among the NFL teams that were present when Penix Jr. made an impression on them at his pro day. One would have to wonder how the team views veteran Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback if they were to use their first-round pick on Penix Jr.
What is certain is that anything is possible under the Steelers new regime with Khan. Though it seems unlikely they will draft a quarterback early, it should not surprise anyone if they decide to add at some point to create some serious competition on their roster.
