The Pittsburgh Steelers' receiving corps took a significant hit with the trade of George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. With 12 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, one might wonder if the team could use one of those picks to acquire a new receiver.
In free agency, the remaining options are limited but could still be beneficial. Arguably the most notable name on the list is veteran Keenan Allen, who recorded 744 receiving yards on 70 receptions and seven touchdowns last season with the Chicago Bears. However, considering his age and the potential value he may command, the Steelers might look for a more cost-effective option in former Jaguars receiver Gabe Davis, who was released earlier today after a disappointing performance with the team in 2024.
Given the questionable depth behind D.K. Metcalf following the trade, the Steelers may opt to use one of their draft picks to acquire a receiver who can complement Metcalf. One name that has been mentioned is New York Jets receiver Allen Lazard, a favorite teammate of Aaron Rodgers, whom the team continues to pursue. However, Lazard himself quickly dismissed this idea in his latest post on Twitter.
Beyond Lazard, the team lacks a wealth of other options. One notable possibility is Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs, who is ironically linked to a potential trade to the Jets.
Bears receiver DJ Moore posted 966 receiving yards on 98 receptions with six touchdowns in 2024. Notably, he signed a four-year, $110 million contract extension with the team prior to last season. A significant factor to consider is his cap hit for next season, which is set at $24.9 million. This could influence how much of the remaining contract the Bears would be willing to take on if a trade for Moore were possible.
Throughout the Steelers' off-season, their moves have largely focused on the future. With the new draft capital acquired since the start of free agency, the team is well-positioned to build a deeper roster. However, this comes at the cost of their current performance, as their offense may weaken considerably with Pickens' departure. Even if they bring in another receiver, it will be up to the existing players, like last year's third-round pick Roman Wilson, who may have a bigger role based on this trade. If they can assemble the right group with Rodgers leading the way, a successful season is certainly within reach.
