When the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Purdue cornerback Cory Trice Jr. in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, they likely understood both the upside and the inherent risks that came with the pick. Trice was a classic late‑round swing: a player with undeniable physical gifts but a medical history that demanded caution.
From a measurable standpoint, Trice offered everything teams covet in a modern NFL cornerback. At 6'3", with long arms, fluid athleticism, and underrated ball skills, he projected as the type of defender who could match up with bigger receivers and disrupt passing lanes. However, he also carried significant injury concerns dating back to a torn ACL in 2021. Those concerns, unfortunately, have followed him into the NFL and have shaped the early trajectory of his career.
Across his first three seasons, Trice has appeared in only six games—all of them coming in the 2024 campaign. His rookie year was lost to injury, and in 2025 he returned to injured reserve after a hamstring issue, later compounded by a knee injury suffered during his 21‑day activation window. Each time he has seemed close to turning a corner, another setback has halted his progress. To this point, his NFL journey has been defined more by rehabilitation than on‑field development.
What makes his situation particularly frustrating is that when Trice is healthy, the talent is evident. He has shown flashes of becoming a full‑time starter, the kind of long, physical corner who fits perfectly in Pittsburgh’s defensive identity. Yet the question is no longer about his ability—it’s about whether his body will allow that ability to surface consistently. As the Steelers continue reshaping their secondary, adding former Bears safety Jaquan Brisker and retaining cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., the window for Trice to carve out a role becomes narrower. Ideally, he would be part of that equation, but his availability remains an ongoing mystery.
Trice's story is one of potential still waiting for its moment. The Steelers took a calculated gamble on a high‑ceiling prospect, and the ceiling hasn’t changed—but the path to reaching it has grown increasingly complicated. Whether he can overcome the injuries that have stalled his career will determine if he becomes a late‑round success story or another “what if” in NFL history. For now, the Steelers can only hope that the talent they saw in him eventually gets the chance to fully emerge.
