Steelers Must Contain Tucker Kraft to Keep Packers in Check

ree

When the Green Bay Packers take the field against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football in Week 8, one name that should be highlighted in the Steelers’ defensive game plan is tight end Tucker Kraft. While Green Bay’s offense features several playmakers, Kraft has quietly emerged as one of its most dangerous weapons—and one who can change the course of the game if left unchecked.

Now in his second year, Kraft has become one of the most reliable contributors in Green Bay’s offensive arsenal. His breakout performance came in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders, when he recorded 124 receiving yards and showcased the athleticism and route-running precision that make him a nightmare for opposing defenses. Since then, Kraft has continued to build momentum, playing a pivotal role in the Packers’ comeback win over Arizona on Sunday, where he tallied five receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Over the past few seasons, defending opposing tight ends has remained a persistent weakness for the Steelers’ defense. According to Statmuse.com, Pittsburgh has allowed an average of 71.8 receiving yards per game to tight ends, with a catch rate nearing 70% over their last 10 contests.

In Week 3, Patriots tight ends exploited this vulnerability, combining for 118 yards and two touchdowns. The trend continued in Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns, where rookie Harold Fannin Jr. and veteran David Njoku totaled 109 yards on 11 receptions. Altogether, tight ends have recorded 36 catches for 403 yards and four touchdowns against the Steelers this season.

Kraft’s versatility—lining up in-line, in the slot, and out wide—makes him a challenging matchup for a Steelers secondary that has struggled in coverage throughout the 2025 season. He’s particularly dangerous in play-action and red zone situations, where quarterback Jordan Love has consistently relied on him to extend drives and finish possessions.

If the Steelers hope to control the tempo and contain Green Bay’s offense, shutting down Tucker Kraft must be a top priority. He’s far more than a complementary piece—he’s Love’s most consistent and dynamic target, capable of turning short gains into drive-sustaining plays and red zone opportunities into touchdowns. Considering Pittsburgh’s ongoing difficulties defending tight ends, allowing Kraft to operate freely could be the difference between a hard-fought victory and a frustrating defeat.
