In a narrow 33–31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense was overwhelmed by the Bengals offensive attack, surrendering over 490 yards of total offense. While the scoreboard suggests a competitive contest, the defensive breakdown told a different story—one failed schemes and execution.

ontrary to early criticism, the Steelers did not rely on a singular defensive approach. Instead, they deployed a diverse array of schemes—including Cover 2, Cover 3, Cover 4, and split coverage—in an effort to neutralize the Bengals’ high-powered aerial attack. Despite this tactical versatility, the outcome was unchanged: Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins repeatedly found open lanes and capitalized on opportunities, exposing vulnerabilities across Pittsburgh’s secondary.

Chase was simply unstoppable. He recorded 16 receptions for 161 yards and a touchdown, consistently winning one-on-one matchups against cornerbacks Joey Porter Jr., Jalen Ramsey, and Darius Slay. Tee Higgins contributed a pivotal 28-yard catch late in the contest, further cementing Cincinnati’s offensive dominance.

In his postgame remarks, Chase openly criticized the predictability of the Steelers’ defensive schemes, casting doubt on the strategic decisions of defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and head coach Mike Tomlin.

However, schematic shortcomings were only part of the problem. The Steelers’ defensive unit failed to execute with the precision and urgency required to disrupt the Bengals’ rhythm. Missed assignments, breakdowns in communication, delayed reactions, and lapses in coverage allowed Cincinnati to control the tempo and exploit mismatches throughout the evening.

This defeat highlights a persistent concern for Pittsburgh: the defense, specifically the secondary, struggles to elevate its performance against top-tier offenses. Until execution aligns with preparation, the Steelers will remain susceptible in high-stakes matchups.
