Steelers Could Turn to Kaden Wetjen as Injuries Mount at Receiver

To say that Pittsburgh Steelers receiver and return specialist Kaden Wetjen has experienced growing pains during his rookie season would be an understatement.
Despite being one of the most prolific kick returners in recent college football history, Wetjen has struggled to find that same success at the NFL level. Through five games, he ranks 40th among 42 qualifying kick returners with a 22.5-yard average per return.
With both Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek sidelined ahead of a pivotal matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend, the Steelers will need contributions from every available skill player. That could open the door for Wetjen to see opportunities beyond the return game.
During his time at Iowa, Wetjen was rarely utilized as a receiver. Across three seasons with the Hawkeyes, he recorded just 23 receptions for 197 yards and one touchdown. However, he showcased intriguing receiving upside during this year's Shrine Bowl week, standing out in one-on-one drills with his route-running ability and separation skills. Even so, what he can provide as a pass catcher at the NFL level remains largely unknown.
The Steelers may not need Wetjen to become a featured piece of the offence, but injuries have a way of accelerating a player's development. With depth suddenly becoming a concern at wide receiver, Pittsburgh could look to capitalize on the speed and athleticism that made Wetjen such a dangerous playmaker in college.
Whether that comes in the form of a few offensive snaps, manufactured touches, or an expanded role on special teams, Sunday's game could provide the rookie with his first real opportunity to prove he can contribute beyond kick returns.
