It’s already been a rollercoaster season for third-year tackle Broderick Jones, and the challenges continue to mount as the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for their Week 6 clash with the Cleveland Browns.
Jones will be tasked with containing one of the NFL’s most dominant pass rushers—defensive end Myles Garrett. Widely regarded as a premier edge threat, Garrett has consistently wreaked havoc on opposing offensive lines, and the Steelers have been no exception.
Since entering the league in 2017, Garrett has recorded 13 career sacks against Pittsburgh. In their Week 12 matchup last season, he was a disruptive force throughout the game, finishing with three sacks and keeping the Steelers’ offense under constant pressure.
As Jones steps into this high-stakes assignment, all eyes will be on whether he can rise to the occasion against one of the league’s elite defenders.
During his Tuesday afternoon press conference, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin spoke to the impact that Myles Garrett has had on the game, emphasizing that rookie tackle Broderick Jones required no motivational speech to understand the caliber of opponent he’ll be facing on Sunday.
"He realizes who he's competing against this week", he told the media at his Tuesday press conference. He’s a competitor and a professional, so I haven’t spent any time thinking about how I’m going to talk to or motivate Broderick this week.”
The responsibility of neutralizing Myles Garrett won’t rest solely on the shoulders of Broderick Jones. The Steelers’ offensive line as a whole will likely need to contribute in order to contain one of the league’s most disruptive pass rushers.
Cleveland enters the week following a disappointing loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London, England. Despite their current record, the Browns boast one of the NFL’s top defensive units—a group that is expected to pose a significant challenge for the Steelers’ offense.
