If there’s one player who has truly earned the title of “ageless wonder,” it’s Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward.
Following an injury-plagued 2023 season, the Steelers signed Heyward to a three-year extension last September. Despite widespread skepticism, he responded in emphatic fashion at age 35, delivering an All-Pro campaign that featured eight sacks and 11 pass breakups.
Although Cam Heyward is under contract through the 2026 season, CBS Sports NFL analyst Tyler Sullivan believes the upcoming campaign could very well be his last. In his list of 10 stars who might retire at the end of 2025, Sullivan highlights the lack of guaranteed money beyond this season as a key factor that could influence Heyward’s decision not to return in 2026.
"Despite being under contract through 2026, however, there are no guarantees in Heyward's deal beyond this coming season. It's possible Heyward could look at this one-season stint with Rodgers as his last kick at the can as well before retiring with another QB reset on the horizon for Pittsburgh."
This outlook could shift significantly based on Heyward’s performance in the upcoming season. Should he ultimately choose to retire, the Steelers appear well-positioned to transition smoothly along the defensive line. A key reason is the emergence of 2025 first-round pick Derrick Harmon, who is already projected to start. He’s joined by fellow rookie Yahya Black, a powerful run-stopper out of Iowa, and veteran free-agent addition Daniel Ekuale, who brings versatility and experience. Promising third-year tackle Keeanu Benton continues to develop into a reliable interior presence, while the unit’s depth is bolstered by Logan Lee, a 2024 seventh-round pick returning from injury.
If 2025 ends up being his swan song, it’ll likely be a decision rooted in health, legacy, and a desire to leave on his own terms.
