Examining The Steelers Minimal Use Of Roman Wilson

One has to wonder: was it real, or merely a mirage?

For second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson, the offseason appeared full of promise — marked by impressive training camp performances and standout playmaking during preseason games. Everything Wilson showcased during that stretch pointed toward the potential for a breakout season. Yet, not only has he produced minimal receiving yards, he has also seen very limited offensive snaps.

Heading into the 2025 season, Wilson was expected to compete for the WR3 role behind then-Steelers receiver George Pickens and newly acquired star DK Metcalf. However, Calvin Austin III has firmly secured the WR2 spot, thanks in part to his speed and growing chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In Week 1, Austin logged 45 snaps and six targets, converting them into 70 yards and a touchdown. Wilson, by contrast, played just 10 offensive snaps and, unsurprisingly, recorded no receiving yards. To make matters worse, he tied Ben Skowronek in snap count — yet Skowronek capitalized on his opportunity with a 22-yard touchdown reception.

Through three games this season, Wilson has totaled just 41 offensive snaps and seven receiving yards. Compounding the issue, the Steelers have leaned heavily on tight ends in their offensive scheme, with Jonnu Smith, Pat Freiermuth, and Darnell Washington all seeing significant playing time.

Wilson’s lack of involvement isn’t necessarily a reflection of his talent, but rather the result of unfortunate injuries, suprising depth chart competition, and strategic decisions. While his NFL debut has been delayed, the Steelers still view him as a valuable long-term asset. If Wilson can stay healthy and seize his opportunities, his breakout moment may be just around the corner.
