The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive performance against the New York Jets left much to be desired, despite escaping with a win. One particularly notable absence on defense was that of veteran linebacker Cole Holcomb.

Holcomb, returning from a near career-ending knee injury sustained in 2023, participated in eight special teams snaps but was notably absent from the defensive lineup in Week 1. Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the decision, stating, “We’re just playing to win the game… We don’t feel obligated for participation. This is not Little League Football.” He emphasized that Holcomb’s opportunity would come when matchups justified his inclusion.

However, the Steelers’ linebacker corps — particularly Payton Wilson and Patrick Queen — struggled against the Jets’ run-heavy offense. Wilson recorded a disappointing 33.2 PFF grade, marked by missed tackles and coverage breakdowns. Queen also underperformed, and the unit failed to contain Breece Hall, who finished the contest with 107 yards on 19 carries.

A closer review of the defensive performance revealed a lack of the physicality and tone-setting presence that has long defined Holcomb’s style of play. His absence, despite being medically cleared, has sparked growing concern and calls for a reevaluation of the defensive rotation heading into Week 2.

With the Seattle Seahawks on deck, Pittsburgh may need to reassess its linebacker deployment — and Holcomb could be the key to a much-needed defensive resurgence.
