After five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, many as of late have speculated that tight end Pat Freiermuth's time with the team may potentially come to an end before the trade deadline.
In previous season, Freiermuth has long been one of the most used and reliable players on the Steelers. This season, however, has seen a noticeable decline in his usage. Most recently, in their Week 4 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin, Ireland, in which he played only 15 offensive snaps - more importantly, it was the first time in his NFL career that he was completely shut out of the passing game.
If there is any reason for why the Steelers could consider trading team, it would due in part the team's tight end room is becoming crowded, resulting in Freiermuth being an afterthought, rather than the centerpiece he once was. Veteran Jonnu Smith and second-year standout Darnell Washington have carved out larger roles, especially in Pittsburgh’s run-heavy schemes. Even offensive lineman Spencer Anderson has seen snaps at tight end, further squeezing Freiermuth’s opportunities.
Then there is the matter of his contract worth around $48 million—a hefty price tag for a player whose role has shrunk. With limited production and a crowded depth chart, the Steelers may see more value in freeing up cap space and acquiring draft capital.
Teams in need of tight end help are reportedly monitoring the situation. The Los Angeles Rams and Washington Commanders have emerged as potential suitors, especially given their need for reliable red-zone threats and veteran leadership.
With the trade deadline set for November 4, the Steelers face a decision: to adjust the offense to suit his skillset or cash in while his value remains respectable. For Freiermuth, a change of scenery might be exactly what he needs to reignite his career.
