Can Elliott Become An All-Pro Safety This Season?

When examining DeShon Elliott's statistics from the 2024 season, it becomes evident that the Steelers safety merited All-Pro consideration.

Last season, few defenders were as proficient in tackling as Elliott. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Elliott achieved a tackle percentage of 97.3%, the highest among defenders with at least 100 attempts since 2018. This is further supported by his run defense performance, where he earned a grade of 87.8, ranking him sixth among all safeties according to Pro Football Focus.

Elliott's timely tackles significantly impacted the game, limiting opposing pass catchers' effectiveness. On 59 targets last season, Elliott allowed a completion percentage of 66.1 and a passer rating of just 88.1. Additionally, he deflected six passes, forced two fumbles, and recovered three.

In essence, last season's statistics suggest that Elliott was not only one of the most valuable players on the Steelers defense but also one of the top overall defenders in the league.

The upgrades made to the Steelers defensive line during the off-season are promising for the upcoming season. Even if these changes reduce Elliott's tackle volume, they could benefit him during the latter part of the season, a period during which injuries were a concern last season.

Despite his eight-year career, Elliott has yet to participate in a Pro Bowl or receive All-Pro status. Throughout many of those years, Elliott was productive and efficient enough to warrant consideration. Given his previous body of work, there are few signs of regression. With an improved defensive front and another year in the Steelers defense, he may finally receive the recognition he rightfully deserves in 2025.
