Asante Samuel Jr. Adds Versatile Value to the Steelers’ Secondary

When we talk about great comeback stories from last season, the one belonging to cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. deserves to be in the discussion.
Four games into the 2024 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, he was placed on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury he sustained in October. Then, in April of 2025, he underwent spinal fusion surgery to correct a lifelong issue, putting his career in limbo.
Rather than give up, he worked his way back and was eventually signed by Pittsburgh on November 12, 2025. In the six games he played — with three starts — he registered 10 tackles, a pass deflection, and an interception while logging 222 defensive snaps.
With Samuel Jr. being re‑signed this year, one has to consider how he fits into new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham’s system, especially given the additions of veteran Jamel Dean in free agency and former Georgia cornerback Daylen Everette in the draft.
Even after a shoulder injury and spinal fusion surgery, Samuel Jr. showed last season that his short‑area burst and route recognition were still intact. That skill set forms the foundation of a nickel role, and it’s a major reason the Steelers brought him back. Pittsburgh likely won’t need him to be the every‑down outside corner he once projected to be with the Chargers; instead, they’ll rely on him to erase quick‑game concepts, handle motion, and keep the middle of the field from becoming a soft spot — areas where he can still win consistently.
Samuel Jr. also brings something most of the cornerbacks on the Steelers’ roster don’t: veteran adaptability. Dean is a boundary anchor. Everette is a long‑term outside project. Brandin Echols is a useful rotational piece. Samuel, however, can toggle between inside and outside depending on matchups, and that versatility gives him a path to 450–550 snaps if he stays healthy.
Samuel Jr.’s journey back to relevance is already one of the Steelers’ best stories. His versatility gives him a clear path to meaningful snaps even in a crowded room. If he stays healthy, the nickel spot is his to command and elevate. And if his confidence returns, Pittsburgh may have found a comeback star hiding in plain sight.
