In the wake of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ blockbuster trades yesterday, it is inevitable that media pundits and analysts will offer their own perspectives—either on what the team should do next or how other organizations might follow suit.
With the addition of Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith to the roster, some have speculated that his arrival could negatively affect Pat Freiermuth, whom the Steelers extended last season.
In his piece yesterday for Athlon Sports, writer Tony Fisher suggested that the addition of Jonnu Smith could signal the Steelers are exploring ways to move on from Pat Freiermuth—similar to how they eventually parted ways with All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. As part of his analysis, Fisher identified a team that could potentially benefit from Freiermuth’s services: the Philadelphia Eagles.
A key point in his rationale was the status of Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert, who has struggled with injuries throughout much of his career. Given the team’s limited depth at the position, Fisher believes Freiermuth could be the impactful addition the Eagles need on their roster.
"He has missed 15 games in the last three seasons because of several injuries. At 30 years old, legitimate questions surround whether Goedert can be the same dependable receiving option for the Eagles in 2025. With limited options currently on the roster, there aren't many other avenues for the team to trust if their star tight end gets hurt again."
As it stands, there are no indications that the Steelers have any intention of trading Pat Freiermuth. What should be taken into consideration is that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s system is heavily predicated on tight end utilization. If anything, the addition of Jonnu Smith provides a complementary option to Freiermuth, further complicating the task for opposing defenses.
