Bateman is a slender, cerebral receiver whose versatility makes him a valuable offensive asset. His true strength comes with crossing or slant routes, where his seamless in his ability to change directions when coming out of his breaks. As a route runner, Bateman is excellent at planning his attack before releasing, effective at stemming opposing defenders, and has a knack at finding soft spots in zone coverage. Does not possess elite speed, but has ideal quickness and uses it effectively to get separation from opposing defenders. Possesses ideal ball skills, Bateman is proficient at tracking the ball in the air, and making catches even if he is well covered by an opposing defensive back. As a blocker, he is surprisingly physical considering his slight frame, and seemingly takes pride in this role, as he would making catches.
For the most part, Bateman has not had to face opposing defensive backs in press overage. With this noted, his ability to separate in press coverage situations is questionable. Does not possess the deep speed necessary to be an effective 'x' receiver; better suited for the 'z' and slot position. Makes the occasional drop, but this can be fixed.
