Player Description

Name: Patrick Surtain II Position: Defensive Back

College: Alabama Uniform Number: #2

Class: Junior Height: 6-2

Weight: 202 lbs Projected Round: mid 1st - 2nd round

Strengths:

  • Technically sound with excellent fundamentals.

  • Underrated athleticism.

  • High football IQ and instincts.

  • Is rarely targeted by opposing quarterback.

  • Rarely, if ever gets fooled on double moves.

  • Has the size to cover tight ends comfortably.

  • Allows little to no space in one-on-one situations, along the sidelines.

  • Excellent ball skill, which is attributed to his fundamentals.

  • Efficient at covering short and large areas.

  • Reasonable downhill speed.

  • Physical in the right measure against receivers.

  • Transitions fluidly from backpedal; no wasted motion.

  • Excellent at tracking the ball in the air while shadowing receivers.

  • Possesses the long speed necessary to keep stride (rarely stacked)

  • Patient at the line of scrimmage; knows how to use his hands in press.

Weaknesses:

An improved tackler, Surtain needs to work on consistently lowering his pad level when engaging. Needs to be more aggressive against opposing receivers trying to block him. In these instances, he offers little to no resistance. Though he has decent deep speed, he does not possess elite deep speed to effectively shadow faster receivers. Against Florida in the SEC Championship, he was beaten over the top by receiver Trevon Grimes, one of the fastest receivers in the conference.
